ADDIE
The ADDIE Instructional Design Model
Abromitis Online Learning uses this pedagogically sound
instructional design model to help your institution analyze the
learning needs of your students, design and develop learning materials,
implement the course and program materials, and evaluate the effectiveness
of those courses and programs. The step-by-step ADDIE design model
revolves around five components:
- Analysis
- Design
- Development
- Implementation
- Evaluation
The ADDIE instructional design model forms a roadmap for the entire
development process, from "What do your students need to learn?"
through the completed learning materials when we ask, "Did
the students learn what they needed?"
Analysis Phase
In the analysis phase, the instructional problem is clarified, the
instructional goals and objectives are established, and the learning
environment and learner's existing knowledge and skills are identified.
Design Phase
The design phase deals with learning objectives, assessment instruments,
exercises, content, subject matter analysis, lesson planning, and
media selection. The design phase should be a logical, orderly method
of identifying, developing, and evaluating a set of planned strategies
targeted for attaining the project's goals.
Development Phase
Instructional designers and developers create and assemble the content
that was blueprinted in the design phase. Storyboards are created,
content is written, and graphics are designed. Technologies are
integrated. Testing is performed. The project is reviewed and revised
according to any feedback given.
Implementation Phase
During the implementation phase, a procedure for training the instructors
and the learners is developed. The instructors' training covers
the course curriculum, learning outcomes, method of delivery, and
testing procedures. The learners' training focuses on new hardware
or software. Testing is completed to ensure that the Web site is
functional and that the books, hands on equipment, tools, CD-ROMs
and software are in place.
Evaluation Phase
The evaluation phase consists of two parts: formative and summative.
Formative evaluation, in which the team "test runs" various
aspects of instructional materials to validate that the goals of
the instruction are being achieved, is present in each stage of
the ADDIE process. Summative evaluation provides information on
the instructional material's efficacy (its ability to do what it
was designed to do). The results are then used to revise instructional
materials, as needed.
